Clay baking dish, Pomaireware™
Large size baking and serving dish for lasagna, casseroles, etc. Unglazed, pure clay cooking dish. Makes a beautiful, rustic table centerpiece, too.
This larger Clay baking dish is about 17" long overall including the handles.
Width is about 12" outside.
Depth inside the pan is around 2-3/4".
Holds approximately 3 quarts liquid (96 ounces.)
Pomaireware™ is hand made in Chile - dimensions are approximate - each piece is somewhat unique.
The clay walls on this dish are close to 1/2" thick. This is a heavy dish, weighs around 7 lbs.
Cooking is likely to be a different experience in this dish, with that much clay bakeware surrounding the food, tempering the heat.
The fig leaves in the photo are pretty big - and this dish is larger than it may appear in the picture.

Clay bakeware has been hand made in Pomaire, Chile since the mid 1800s. This distinctive piece is both functional and decorative and makes a unique serving dish.
Ovens work around the clock in Pomaire, packed full of clay pieces. Each item is formed, dried, then smoothed and burnished with an agate stone before being fired. No glaze or varnish is used, the only ingredient is lead free clay. It takes around 8 hours in the oven to create the dry, hard finish. This is a hand made item, so no two are exactly alike, and each one has its own blemishes and shades of color.
Very popular all over Chile for baking and serving. Use soft utensils such as wood, bamboo, or plastic; hand wash. While the finish is fairly tough, it could be cured by cooking with oil at first. Bear in mind that this clay is somewhat porous - it's not glazed - so if left sitting with water in it some leakage may occur. Cooking oil is thicker and will not soak through.
